Federal Election Platform

Imagine a world where animals and people live together in harmony with our planet. A world where we ensure the health of animals, as well as ourselves, and the planet we all share.

This is the world that the Animal Justice Party is working towards. To make it happen, we need political representation that stands up first and foremost for the animals, and also the people, and the places we love.

For too long, animal issues have been ignored by the major political parties. The Animal Justice Party was created to address these issues – to give a political voice to animals. Whether it’s through amending and strengthening laws in local government areas, state, or federal parliament – we seek to bring positive change to the way animals are treated.

In the 2025 Federal election we are campaigning on the following platform for improving, rebalancing, and enriching life for animals. It’s time to act – are you ready to be part of the change? See the complete description of each election platform pillar on the national Animal Justice Party site.

  • Fix the Food System
    • $50 million per year for programs that encourage Australians to eat more fruits and vegetables
    • $180 million per year for promoting innovation in farming and processing technology to produce food that is healthy, delicious and affordable
    • Requiring processed meats to be labelled as Class 1 carcinogens
    • $100 million per year Future Food Fund to back innovation in the alternative proteins sector, absent of animal cruelty, and with low environmental impact
  • End Wildlife Slaughter
    • Abolish lethal control methods, such as 1080 poison, shooting, trapping and bludgeoning
    • End all government-sanctioned wildlife killing programs, including shooting, poisoning and commercial exploitation
    • Ban recreational and commercial hunting, including duck shooting, shearwater killing and trophy hunting
    • Support farmers and communities in coexisting with wildlife, funding education, mitigation measures, compensation and habitat restoration
  • Veticare
    • Reduce cost of living, for low income Australians, by subsidising household veterinary costs
    • Support vets and enhance wildlife care, by reimbursing vets for costs incurred in providing treatment for wildlife
    • Subsidise veterinary costs for un-homed companion animals, for example, at animal shelters
    • Manage companion animal populations by fully funding desexing and microchipping programs
  • Increased Penalties for Cruelty
    • Create a Federal Independent Office of Animal Protection (IOAP) to provide national leadership in protecting all animals from acts of violence and harm, and investigating and tackling the social determinants of animal cruelty
    • Advocate for laws to more closely reflect community values and expectations - that animal cruelty is not a low level crime as the current penalties suggest - animals must be protected and kept safe by adequately deterring acts of violence and harm
    • Bring laws in Tasmania in line with those developed by the AJP in NSW, including the outlawing of the most cruel practices such as forced swim, strangulation and smoke tests
  • End Salmon Farming
    • No to factory-farmed fish anywhere!
    • Protect marine wildlife and the marine environment
    • Make the shift to plant-based aquaculture industries
    • Invest in cell culture aquaculture research
  • Stop Old Growth Forest Logging
    • Old growth forests support a myriad of creatures
    • End logging in Tasmanian State forests
    • Support those involved in forest logging to transition
    • Rewild and rehabilitate logged forests to provide animal habitat
  • Ban Factory Farming
    • Consumer education to reduce factory farmed animal consumption
    • Rapid phase out of cages, pens, stalls, crates and other enclosures (including fish farms) that do not allow animals complete freedom of movement
    • Remove government subsidies for factory farming and instead provide incentives for plant-based farming
    • Support for farmers and industry workers, to transition to plant-based, alternative farming practices
  • End Live Export
    • Ban the live export of all animals, including greyhounds, cattle, horses, goats, camels, crayfish, buffalo and others
    • Continue support for a ban on live export of sheep, to ensure that the ban is not overturned

Animals participate in all the richness that life has to offer, just like we do.

They experience a range of emotions, feel comfort and pain, and form strong bonds and relationships with others. And just like us, animals deserve to live a life free from suffering and exploitation.

But when it comes to political decision making, animals are left behind by the major parties.

The Animal Justice Party is standing up for animals because they cannot stand up for themselves. We’re creating a world where animals are treated with compassion and respect.
